What is Minor-League Football?

Have you ever asked yourself what happens to all of those would-be pro players that don’t get drafted after college? What about those walk-on players who spend time with that NFL team but didn’t make the final roster or even that local high-school athlete who didn’t get an opportunity to play at the college level due to grades?

Welcome to minor-league football!! Minor league football gives football players and athletes another avenue to continue to play the game that they love – the greatest game in the world. While the teams semi-pro and minor-league have become interchangeable, they have two different origins. In the past, a semi-pro player was one who was paid to play. The pay was meager and one could not make a living with it so the player was not considered professional.

Minor-league on the other hand is a term better known for a professional baseball team’s “farm team” – a place where they prepare players to battle against the pros or where their franchise players are sent down to for rehabilitation after an injury.

More amateur football teams have been adopting the moniker minor-league. The NFL does not currently have any kind of a system like major league baseball with their minor-league affiliates. This can be detrimental to would-be NFL players because they really get only one true shot at the NFL through the draft after they complete college.

Many players develop into better athletes after given this opportunity but all-to-often it is too late. It could be that they even missed out on their opportunity to play college ball to begin with diminishing their hopes even more. Shouldn’t those players have somewhere to go to continue their development and expand their knowledge of the game? They do and it’s called minor-league football!

While amateur football has been around for decades only recently have the leagues realized their potential to play a major role in developing players to one day get an opportunity to sign that big NFL or CFL contract or even play indoor football – for pay!
